Three babies, two births, one MDA paramedic. MAGEN DAVID ADOM paramedic Yosef Shilo recently had a particularly exciting night shift. In the span of just a few hours, he skillfully attended two births and delivered three babies in his MAGEN DAVID ADOM MICU.

The eventful night began at around eight when he was dispatched to a home in Tira in central Israel to tend to a woman who was in labor with twins. Shilo and his ambulance driver, Mohammad Nasar, drove to the woman’s home, and after conducting a medical examination, ascertained that they needed to bring the expectant mother to the hospital since labor was quickly progressing.

While they were driving to the hospital, Shilo alerted the hospital’s labor and delivery unit that they were on their way to ensure that a delivery room would be available for their patient. However, when they arrived at the hospital, birth began right in the parking lot, and with the help of a hospital midwife who joined the MAGEN DAVID ADOM team, the pregnant woman gave birth to a healthy pair of twin boys.

Just a few hours later, at around three in the morning, Shilo and Nasar were dispatched to assist yet another pregnant woman in labor. This woman was experiencing contractions at her home in Raanana. Once Shilo performed a medical examination, he again determined that the patient would need to be transported to the hospital.

The woman’s water broke en route to the hospital, and her contractions became more frequent and intense. Shilo concluded that it would be safest to pull over to the side of the road and deliver the baby right in the MICU. Minutes later, he delivered a healthy baby girl.

“It was a really exciting shift,” reflected Shilo. “Helping bring life into the world is one of the most satisfying and amazing things in my job, and that night I got to help twice.”
