The atmosphere was joyful as Dario Saharof’s family gathered at the beach to celebrate his 91st birthday. The day was perfect, filled with laughter, warmth, and the kind of memories that last a lifetime.

But as the celebration came to an end, Dario began to feel unwell. He suddenly went into cardiac arrest and collapsed onto the sand.

Dario’s son, Eran, a longtime volunteer ambulance driver and EMT with MAGEN DAVID ADOM, immediately recognized what was happening and began preforming CPR on his father. For minutes that felt like an eternity, Eran performed chest compressions and fought for his father’s life. His training took over as he worked tirelessly until miraculously, Dario’s heart began beating again. When the MICU arrived at the beach a few minutes later, they found a stable patient ready for transport to the hospital where Dario recovered.

“As an MDA volunteer, I am gratified by every patient I have been able to help, but there is nothing more satisfying than saving the person who is closest to me,” said Eran, 59, of Tzur Yitzhak in central Israel. “My father gave me life, and I was privileged to bring him back to life on his 91st birthday. There’s nothing more amazing than that.”

Dario’s cardiac arrest event was six years ago, and he just celebrated his 97th birthday. The bond between Dario and Eran is stronger than ever.

“The greatest gift I could have received on that birthday was getting my life back,” reflected Dario. “I can’t even begin to thank Eran for the fact that thanks to him I am privileged to continue to be with my children and grandchildren.”
