Since the outbreak of war on October 7, 2023, MAGEN DAVID ADOM, Israel’s national emergency medical service and blood bank, has been on the front lines of emergency response across Israel. With a network of 37,500 volunteers, employees, and national service personnel operating from 206 primary stations nationwide, MAGEN DAVID ADOM has delivered critical care and lifesaving support in the face of unprecedented missile and rocket attacks, mass casualty events, terrorist infiltrations, and community evacuations.

With the war now exceeding 600 days, below are some facts and figures for background/reporting:

Key Numbers Since October 7, 2023:

  • On October 7, MAGEN DAVID ADOM’s national call centers handled over 21,600 emergency calls—more than five times the usual volume for a regular Saturday. MAGEN DAVID ADOM immediately mobilized its entire fleet of 1,430 ambulances and intensive care units alongside hundreds of emergency motorcycles, 3 helicopters, command and control vehicles, and 24 mass casualty response vehicles equipped to deploy mobile treatment sites.
  • 38 MAGEN DAVID ADOM personnel have lost their lives since the outbreak of the war.
  • Fleet Expansion: Added 659 new vehicles, including armored ambulances, medicycles, mobile blood donation units, mass casualty trailers, and rapid response vehicles.
  • Increased Manpower: Recruitment of 12,000 new volunteers to bolster emergency response teams.
  • Training Programs: Over 500,000 individuals trained in CPR and first aid across 17,000 training sessions nationwide.
  • Blood Donations: On October 7th 2023, more than 3,445 blood units were collected and processed. In 2024 alone, approximately 280,183 blood units were collected, processed and distributed for 98% of Israel’s blood transfusions. The Marcus National Blood Services Center also introduced field-ready whole blood transfusions and freeze-dried plasma, dramatically lowering battlefield mortality.
  • Human Milk Distribution: Tripled the amount of donated human breast milk to infants affected by the war. Approximately 3,340 liters of breast milk were collected from 460 donors for babies in need, and whose mothers were injured, kidnapped, or on active duty.

Major Initiatives:

  • Bolstered Civil Emergency Preparedness: MAGEN DAVID ADOM launched the “Magen” (Shield) Project, a nationwide effort to bolster the civilian front for emergencies and mass-casualty events, including the establishment of 800 Community Emergency Response Teams in high-risk areas and the distribution of medical kits to 15,600 civilians, including 880 doctors and paramedics.
  • Expanded Midwives Dispatch Program:
    MAGEN DAVID ADOM
, in cooperation with volunteer midwives, launched an initiative that dispatches professional, local midwives to assist with out-of-hospital birth and has since recruited approximately 200 volunteers.
  • Enhanced Emotional Support for EMS Personnel: Nearly doubled the reach of its post traumatic stress disorder prevention program, which provides “psychological first aid” to MAGEN DAVID ADOM personnel, promoting their mental health following traumatic incidents.
